Antigua

This Summer Session I 2023 the Program in Maritime Studies of East Carolina University will conduct a
field school in region Antigua, a Leeward Island in the Caribbean region . Our team will perform a variety
of underwater archaeological searching, surveying, mapping, techniques on submerged resources in
UNESCO Antigua Naval dockyard World Heritage Site . Both diving and non-diving activities associated
with maritime fieldwork will be undertaken. Students will be supervised and attended to by two faculty
instructors, a staff archaeologist, a dive safety officer, and two second maritime studies crew chiefs. The
Program in Maritime Studies is partnering with Antigua & Barbuda National Parks Authority . NPA is the
recognized managing Authority for the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Antigua where we will be
working on shipwreck sites and coastal fortifications . We will also be be working with a variety of
community groups and offering UNESCO UNITWIN capacity building workshops in the evenings or as
part of daily rotations. Our Program is a full member of this organization that promotes international
networking, academic, and community collaborations.
