Graduate Certificate Program in Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology
Expand your opportunities for future employment!
Looking to build skills needed to working in the water industry or to get a leg up for getting into graduate school? This graduate certificate program may be for you!
The Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology Certificate will allow you to demonstrate to potential employers or research advisors that you have a solid foundation in water and soil sampling techniques, the collection and application of hydrologic measurements, data analysis, and numerical modeling. The Certificate program is a great first step to a future career!
Who is the program for?
- Current ECU Graduate Students: Did you know that you can apply courses to both your graduate degree and the Certificate program? Some students may even be able to obtain the Certificate without taking any additional courses beyond what is required in their degree program if they plan ahead.
- ECU Undergraduate Students: It may be possible to meet some Certificate requirements as you complete your undergraduate degree! This means you could potentially complete the graduate Certificate program with as little as an extra semester of study if you plan your courses out carefully! Talk to us about it!
- Working Professionals: You can enroll directly as a Certificate student at ECU. In some cases it may be possible to find an accelerated program to support your studies.
If you have a quick question about our Hydro Certificate Graduate Program, you can book a short meeting with Dr. Moysey using this link.

FAQs:
- There is no research or independent project requirement for the certificate program.
- You can count courses you take toward both a graduate degree program (MS/PhD) and the certificate program.
- Undergraduates can apply 5000 and 6000 courses taken prior to graduation with a BS degree toward Certificate program requirements, thereby shortening the time required to obtain a graduate Certificate after graduating from an undergraduate degree program.

and
3 s.h. in Geological Characterization and Quantitative Analysis:
GEOL 6250 – Stratigraphic Analysis
GEOL 6550 – Principles of Geophysics
GEOL 6950 – Geological Data Analysis
*GEOL 6705 – Seminar in Geology
or a 3 s.h. elective
*GEOL 6705 is acceptable if the topics discussed address geological characterization and quantitative analysis.
Here are some elective courses that I will approve for the program:
EHST 5800/5801 – Solid and Hazardous Waste Management and Laboratory
EHST 6203 – Geospatial and Statistical Analyses in Environmental Health
EHST 6400 – Technical Advances in Water Supply and Waste Treatment
PLAN 6301 – Computer Applications for Planning and Development
Please contact me if you would like to propose an alternative course.
What if a course I need is not being taught?
In special circumstances an alternative course may be substituted for one of the requirements above. You must make a petition to me that explains the situation, what alternative course you propose, and why that course is an appropriate substitute for the required course. No course will be accepted as a substitute unless I approve your petition in writing – save this email to document the fact that the exemption has been approved!
